Abstract

Quantifying forest structure, aboveground biomass, and ecosystem function is critical to understanding and predicting the future of tropical forests, including the potential impacts of habitat disturbance on carbon storage and seed dispersal processes. This talk covers research that assesses the structure, biomass and ecosystem function of contrasting Amazonian forests, including seasonally-flooded forests and forests disturbed by logging and fires, through investigation of functional plant traits such as wood density, dispersal mode and seed size.
