(Contact the author)Abstract
This session explores how we can better support international students by bridging cultural, academic and linguistic gaps to foster success and belonging. Drawing on insights from international colleges’ roles in preparing students, the seminar highlights the diversity of backgrounds students bring and why their experience directly impacts retention, outcomes and institutional reputation. We will examine the international student journey, from cultural adjustment and educational differences to challenges with language, academic expectations and wellbeing. Practical teaching strategies are shared, including clear communication, scaffolding, assessment transparency and culturally sensitive feedback, alongside the importance of inclusive learning materials. Beyond teaching, the session addresses how we can create welcoming environments, support integration, encourage peer networks and navigate cultural norms with empathy. Communication outside the classroom through approachable office hours, effective written exchanges and respectful handling of misunderstandings is also explored. The session closes with key takeaways and a reflective prompt, inviting colleagues to consider one actionable change to enhance inclusivity and improve the overall student experience.
