Abstract

In this session we will be sharing our co-delivery story for the national project management integrated degree apprenticeship programme, which is a collaboration between the University of Cumbria and BAE Systems Early Careers. We will provide insights into the models of co-delivery we have tested, some of the challenges we have faced, as well as the benefits that we have encountered in the last three years. The BSc (Hons) Project Management (BAE Systems PMDA) is a five-year part-time integrated degree apprenticeship programme which is run in partnership with BAE Systems Early Careers. The first cohort of apprentices started in September 2022 with approximately 90 apprentices. We are now teaching four cohorts with 400+ apprentices enrolled on the programme. The apprentices are located nationally in England and clustered around BAE Systems sites and business units, but with Barrow submarines being the largest cohort overall. There is hybrid teaching on the programme, which includes on-campus in-place sessions in Lancaster or Portsmouth and online sessions. The programme is delivered via the Canvas learning management platform, supplied by BAE Systems Early Careers team. Under current contracting arrangements approximately 15% of the 320 credits of the programme (i.e. excluding the End-Point Assessment module) is co-delivered by BAE Systems Early Careers team. Some modules, for example, Academic and Professional Skills (Level 4) and Legal, Ethical & Sustainability Issues (Level 5) have a smaller 20% contribution by the business. Whereas other modules, such as Projects in Action (Level 4) and Projects in Contemporary Organisations (Level 5), have a more significant co-delivery element (80%) from the business. As the programme is evolving and the business needs of BAE Systems is changing, the approach to co-delivery is regularly reviewed and refreshed.
