Abstract

Professor Amanda Taylor-Beswick, Professor of Digital and Social Sciences at the University of Cumbria, gave a keynote speech which explored her initial love for, and current concerns about, the use of digital technologies in research. In this keynote, Amanda explores the intersections of creative research methods, post-digital practice, and the ethical use of technology and AI. Drawing on her extensive experience in social work, education, and research, she examines the challenges and responsibilities of conducting research in an increasingly automated world.

Highlights include:
-Reflections on her research journey, phenomenography, and creative pedagogy.
-Outsourcing practices to AI: from social robots in museums to automation in social work.
-Ethical and practical implications of digital technologies in research, teaching, and professional practice.
-How digital inequality creates “double disadvantages” for participants and young people.
-The importance of slow ethics, agency, and critical thinking in a world dominated by technology and broligarchs.
-Data protection, GDPR, informed consent, and explainability in research using digital platforms.
-Strategies for educators and researchers to critically engage with digital tools and AI.
-Key reading lists, references, and examples to inspire resistance, creativity, and ethical practice.

A call for reflection on non-negotiables in AI-saturated environments and the value of collective action. Amanda’s talk invites discussion, reflection, and creative problem-solving for researchers navigating the post-digital world.
