Abstract

A talk covering several aspects of Penny’s research into this little-known but important milestone in the story of this Cultural Landscape. At the point at which she visited the Lake District, Ann Radcliffe was at the height of her fame and was one of the most popular novelists of the late-eighteenth century. The account of her experiences in the region appeared the following year and provides an important stepping-stone in the journey from picturesque tourism to Wordsworth’s development of a poetics of place. This talk will explore some key moments in the tour, including Radcliffe’s account of Kendal as a gateway to the region, her pioneering ascent of Skiddaw and her evocative account of crossing Lancaster Sands.
