Abstract
University of Cumbria Senior Lecturer in Education Sue Temple gave an engaging talk and guided tour of the Fusehill Street Campus to a group from the University of the Third Age (U3A). The session offered a fascinating look into the history of the main building, which originally served as a workhouse. Sue, who specialises in teaching trainee teachers how to deliver history lessons, shared her passion for the building’s heritage and the broader context of workhouses. Her talk was brought to life with illustrations and a hands-on opportunity to examine historical documents related to the site’s past. The Fusehill Workhouse was requisitioned during both world wars to act as a hospital for wounded service men before becoming the general hospital when the NHS was established. In 1999 it was purchased by St Martin’s College to become a university, transforming into the University of Cumbria in 2007.
