Abstract

Both culture and language pose challenges for learning in multicultural settings (Whitelegg & Smidt 2009 pp.13-24). More specifically in science learning these challenges are compounded since science adopts its own unique culture and language (Case 2002) which can be counterintuitive to everyday contexts (Greenfield 2008, Murphy et al 2009 p.63). This ECA seeks to examine these challenges and issues that surround in relation to the aspiration to provide equitable science learning opportunities for English Language Learners (ELLs) in multicultural settings (Case 2002, Whitelegg & Smidt 2009 p.23). In so doing it is important to define what language means, and for this ECA it will be taken to mean the linguistic aspects of communication in any form.
