Abstract

What can be done to ensure a health and care system that can continue to look after us, whilst also meeting our increasing expectations for longer and more rewarding lives? As part of our tenth anniversary, we are pleased to welcome Dr Kevin Doughty, Visiting Professor for Digital Transformation of Care Services, who will provide a talk on innovation in care, and the opportunities for service improvement. As life expectancy increases, the NHS, our housing and local authorities are having to deal with huge problems, both medical and social. Immediate and on-going increases in funding, and in the number of doctors, nurses, hospital beds and in associated services may be the simple answer, but is this sustainable? In this lecture Kevin Doughty will argue that we need to be more innovative in our approaches to care, especially through the use of technologies. There are many devices and systems already available; these utilise digital techniques being used in other industries, from travel to retail, and from banking to manufacturing. Yet care services have been slow to join the digital revolution, partly because of the need for a cultural change. Kevin will attempt to demonstrate how innovation may transform conventional service delivery and can underpin future improvements in health and well-being, through service redesign. He will assert that both professionals and service users need to understand the potential of technology and not fear the impact of innovation. This requires them to be inspired both to accept the potential for improving service delivery and outcomes through digital innovation.
