Abstract

Urban and regional transition in Europe display considerable heterogeneity: this is a key conclusion that can be drawn from this issue of Regions. It is easy to see why this might appear counter-intuitive. The countries of Central and Eastern Europe, after all, share a common legacy in their experience of central planning under communism followed by sudden exposure to western capitalism since the 1990s. Yet our guest editors, Daniel Klimovsky and Uros Pinteric, assemble a set of short papers on the varied responses to one aspect of these transitions: the evolution of local self-government.
