Abstract

At the start of the academic year 2005-2006, all aspects of HE Progress File, including support for
students’ personal development planning processes, should be in place for all students “across the
whole system and for all HE awards”1.
In 2004, the UK GRAD Programme, in collaboration with the Centre for Recording Achievement and
the National Postgraduate Committee2 commissioned a review of emerging practice relating to
Personal Development Planning (PDP), and the linked process of Training Needs Analysis for
postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers.
The review was carried out to meet the needs of the sector by:
• providing a picture of current developments within institutions;
• assisting the sharing of good practice;
• informing further development work; and
• minimising wasted energy spent reinventing wheels.
This brief report builds upon the earlier work, and highlights issues and developments reported in new and updated
submissions to the PDP Database at www.grad.ac.uk, by autumn 2005. The 2004 Review focussed primarily on PDP
processes for postgraduate researchers; few of the entries overtly linked PDP and TNA with provision for
postdoctoral researchers. This experience has been reflected in the 2005 Review.
