Abstract

Martin Fowler's essay Pitlessie Fair?: Some Thoughts On The ‘Forth Green Freeport’ From A ‘Political’ Artist’ was published on the Society of Scottish Artists online blog as part of the SSA Essay Project. Launched in April 2024, The SSA Essay Project is intended to highlight the creative thinking of the Society's members and to provide a platform for expressing and sharing their opinions on Art, Life and the World.

The so-called ‘Forth Green Freeport’ is one of two in Scotland. The other, located in the North East, encircles the Black Isle and Cromarty Firth. The Forth ‘freeport’, or ‘Special Economic Zone’, envelops a large swathe of the Edinburgh and Fife conurbation. Its boundaries stretch from Falkirk to Portobello and from Burntisland to Loanhead. In total, it covers 45km and encompasses Edinburgh airport, Grangemouth and Rosyth.
