Abstract

This workshop served as a platform to share findings from Lula’s research into the provision of support to women who are serving custodial sentences. Lula’s aim was to facilitate a conversation between academics, infant feeding professionals, midwifery and health visiting staff, commissioning staff, and peer supporters on the needs of this vulnerable group. Participants thought about the needs of the breastfeeding dyad and how best to deliver support that met those needs in prisons and after release. The discussion considered how and where the support is delivered and what could be done to improve it. Prison staff turnover and scarcity of places in prison mother and baby units (MBUs) have made the situation complex. Participants also considered how covid disrupted the provision of services, training, and support. Lula’s research, as well as experiences of participants show that support is not universally and uniformly available, despite changes in commissioning. The meeting was part of a Lula’s ongoing activity, which received one of the University of Cumbria RKE Impact grants, to ensure the message about the importance of supporting those women who wish to breastfeed and making it possible to women in prisons reaches policymakers. It also coincides with the upcoming WHO Breastfeeding week, the theme of which this year is ‘Breastfeeding support for all.’
