Abstract

Michelle Edmondson, Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) student within the University of Cumbria's Institute of Business, Industry and Leadership, has contributed to a Parliamentary enquiry. Michelle’s letter to the committee responds to a National Audit Office report and outlines the importance of developing a clear definition of whistleblowing that can be incorporated into policy. Michelle also noted the requirement for further discussion on the use and accountability of the spending public money in relation to tribunals and legal challenges associated with whistleblowing cases. Michelle provided a series of points for the committee to consider as part of their review, including the impact of organisational culture on whistleblowing. Michelle welcomed the opportunity to contribute to the investigation as a way to engage with the field of whistleblowing and share knowledge from her academic work to date. It is important to contribute to a tropic where there is an opportunity to so do, as this helps develop the field. There is much work to do in the whistleblowing arena across academia and practice, such as with understanding policy and practice divides and the wellbeing of whistleblowing, making this a rich field to study. As well as maturing her ability to synthesise and be concise about key issues, Michelle is developing her academic view in multiple ways. She will be checking for updates for the PAC hearing later this year and considering how this audit can be included as her research progress.
