Abstract

Health and Society Knowledge Exchange (HASKE), at the University of Cumbria, was commissioned by NHS England Workforce, Training and Education (NHSE WTE), via Buckinghamshire New University, to undertake an evaluation of the South East Paramedic Leadership Project.

The South East Paramedic Leadership Project was funded by NHSE WTE and delivered in partnership with Buckinghamshire New University and the University of Cumbria. The aim of the project was to improve the knowledge and skills of paramedic leaders by delivering four workshops across the South East region between July 2023 and January 2024, followed by a final conference in March 2024. The South East Coast and South Central ambulance services were the primary target population, but colleagues from further afield were welcomed. The workshops were open to paramedics of all levels, from newly qualified paramedics to directors, along with student paramedics, and those in roles working alongside paramedics.

Each workshop consisted of five ‘lightning learning’ sessions, which were 45 minutes in duration, and centred around the following themes: communication and engagement; envisioning the future; managing concerns; cultural change; and leadership development. These themes were drawn out of areas for improvement highlighted in recent Care Quality Commission reports of the South East Coast and South Central ambulance services.

The evaluation aimed to understand the experiences of those attending the workshop and their learning about paramedic leadership, and how this learning was applied in their roles.
