Abstract

In a landscape where tradition meets sustainability, the Wasdale farming community holds cultural and social capital that has shaped the Lake District for centuries. Authored by University of Cumbria's Emeritus Professor Lois Mansfield and current doctoral researcher Owen Morgan, this report commissioned by West Lakeland CIC delves into the role of Wasdale's agro-pastoral farmers, shedding light on the intricate balance between human endeavours and ecological resilience. Drawing from primary data collected directly from the local community, the report highlights the rich cultural heritage, archaeology, and history embedded within Wasdale's farming landscape. From ancient drystone walls to the timeless practices of hefting and gathering, the Wasdale valley is shaped by the symbiotic relationship between people and land. However, contemporary challenges such as economic pressures and agricultural policies risk eroding Wasdale's cultural heritage, while escalating visitor numbers strain both resources and community cohesion. In response, the report offers a comprehensive set of recommendations aimed at preserving and promoting Wasdale's unique socio-ecological system. These recommendations offer a roadmap for safeguarding its cultural and social capital for generations to come. The researchers conclude that by embracing sustainability and collaboration, the Wasdale farming community can continue to thrive as stewards of one of England's most cherished landscapes and its natural capital.
