Abstract

Kimberley’s essay entitled ‘Florence Ada Stoney: Formidable Feminism in the History of Radiology’. Florence Stoney was the first female Radiologist in England and helped to shape the role of ‘Diagnostic Radiographer’ as we know it to be today. The essay explores Florence’s life, her work during World War I, and how she became a pioneer in radiology. Kimberley also wrote about gender disparity in radiology, and how Florence is a role model for all women wanting to embark on a career in either medicine or radiography.

This article is based on an essay written by Kimberley which came 2nd place in the John Clifton Essay Prize in November 2023, a national competition run by the British Society for the History of Radiology.
