Abstract

Julie Mulinga, Principal Lecturer for Nursing at the University of Cumbria, UK: My talk covered my experiences as a student and continuing, where my passion for end of life care came from, the importance of 'getting it right', language used; the need to talk about death and self care. The session ended with a short youtube video 'Dying for beginners' by Dr Kathryn Mannix (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayMhA1pRLeY&t=2s).

The University of Cumbria Institute of Health held its first Day of the Dead conference for its nursing, midwifery, and allied health profession students, sparking learning and conversations about death and dying and helping to equip graduates with skills for their future careers. Death and dying is not something many people are comfortable talking about, yet it is something that healthcare professionals need to discuss confidently with the people they support. This is an opportunity to hear from experts about a range of topics related to death. Coinciding with the date of the traditional Latin American Dia de los Muertos festival, in a first of its kind, the event attracted 200 students from health-related programmes delivered in Barrow, Carlisle, and Lancaster.
