Abstract
Considering RE teachers as “pedagogical bricoleurs” (Freathy et al., 2017, p. 430) this paper reports findings from a PhD thesis and discusses the bricolage of pedagogical approaches which RE teachers discuss in relation to how they promote mutual respect and tolerance with pupils aged 11-14. In particular, it considers how and when teachers make pedagogical decisions for values education. It examines the significance of teachers’ personal knowledge (Everington, 2014) as an explicit pedagogical tool and looks at the role of insider accounts from religious people and pupils. The paper presents concrete examples of how teachers articulate the use of modelling and classroom discussion and looks at how intolerant moments may represent critical instances for promoting mutual respect and tolerance. It will argue for a rejection of a universal pedagogical formula for values education in favour of embracing the inherent complexity of the task.
