Abstract
Lancashire is famous for its wakes holidays, but where did these come from? This booklet traces their history from ancient parish revels of the Middle Ages to the development of modern seaside resorts. It looks at the customs of rushbearing and morris dancing, at the region's many fairs, and at old sports and recreations. It also offers a fresh view of the impact of the industrial revolution, arguing that tradition and continuity were important features of the development of 'the world's first industrial society'.
