(Contact the author)Abstract
Paul Stewart is a Professor of Control and Systems Engineering, and joined UoC on 1st Feb 2023 as Founding Research Chair in Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing in the new Institute of Engineering, Computing and Advanced Manufacturing (IECAM). Over a 30 - year research career, he has in his own words ‘been around the block’, including 16 years in the Electrical Machines and Drives Research Group at Sheffield University, Head of Aerospace Engineering at Salford University, founding Head of School of Engineering and Pro Vice Chancellor Research at Lincoln University, and Director of the Institute for Innovation and Sustainable Engineering at the University of Derby where he also held an Endowed Chair in Intelligent systems. Starting out in research focused on Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering for Lotus Cars and Airbus, he has crossed subject boundaries including low carbon airport operations with Manchester and Zurich Airports, global big data systems for Siemens, large scale EU funded SME support programmes in Decarbonisation and Transport, and more recently Healthcare Technology and Renal Dialysis outcomes with Kidney Research UK and University Hospitals Derby and Burton NHS Trust. In this talk, Prof Stewart will introduce his research, and what he has learned through successes and the occasional (very) bad decision about developing personal research strategies for academic staff and institutions, networking, attracting grants, discipline hopping, and what he discovered implementing a mentoring scheme with practitioners in a fundamentally different discipline.
