Abstract

Background:
• WHO estimates that 1 in 3 women world wide will experience sexual or physical abuse from an intimate partner in their lifetime.
• Globally, 7% of women have been sexually assaulted by someone other than a partner and as many as 38% of murders of women are committed by an intimate partner.
• 200 million women have experienced female genital mutilation/cutting. (worldbank.org)
• In the UK An estimated 1.6 million women aged 16 to 74 suffered domestic abuse in England and Wales in the last year, and around 5.1 million women aged 18 to 74 were victims of some form of abuse as a child. (ONS)
