Abstract

Senior lecturer in physiotherapy Sarah Smith was invited to present at the Royal College of Physicians as part of their accredited CPD sessions for doctors in their first year of consultant appointment. This was an online event with over 500 doctors from around the UK. The topic of the evening was “To treat or not to treat” – what principles can we use to guide us when navigating difficult treatment decisions. The presentation was on the ethical considerations in the medical management and neurorehabilitation outcomes of a patient. The case was a young adult with a traumatic brain injury and the delivery of clinically assisted nutrition and hydration. As well as the case presentation, Sarah was part of a panel of doctors that answered questions on the need for best interests frameworks and what is considered as ‘quality of life’.
