Abstract
One incident of globalisation has been the recent phenomenon of some universities becoming preoccupied with their position in a world ranking. However, for most British universities a more immediate concern is the contribution they make through teaching, research, and other activities to the society and the economy of the United Kingdom. The purpose of this article is to examine, in a sub-regional setting, why a particular university was born and the role it is seeking to discharge.
