Abstract

The 'outdoors' and the natural environment are significant and arguably, in physical activity research, under-acknowledged spaces/places and ideological contexts in which physical activity recreation and learning take place. These diverse spaces and spaces co-construct formal, non-formal and informal education and learning arenas with a variety of young and older people and with a variety of aims. Over the last two decades there has been increased interest in the study of outdoor activities which include the study of outdoor education, outdoor recreation, leisure and sport, particularly from social, cultural, educational and environmental perspectives (Humberstone, Prince and Henderson, 2016).
