Abstract

This work details a procedure for introducing a maternal body image support initiative into local health visiting practice. The evidence for the change is specified in a literature review, which details the various risks to maternal and infant physical and mental health arising from maternal body dissatisfaction; and its key role in several major public health challenges. The underpinning theoretical framework for the sociological aspects of body image development is outlined and linked with contemporary evidence and recommendations. The process for translation of the change agenda into a pilot scheme in practice is then discussed within the framework of Action Research. Finally, the evaluative processes for augmenting procedural value, facilitating sustainability and assessing impact will be explored. Additionally, in this chapter, the scope for developing the project and expansion across public health disciplines will be identified.
