Abstract
Obesity is on the rise in the United Kingdom. As a result, operating departments are faced with the daily challenge of maintaining the safety of this group of patients. Checklists have been implemented in the operating departments of hospitals worldwide since 2009 in an attempt to standardise care. This dissertation looks at the literature evidence which supports the proposal for change with regards the obese surgical patient. It aims to prove that the needs of these patients are unique enough to warrant a specific operating room checklist and briefing documentation to guarantee that all their needs are met in a safe, standardised way. Change theories will be explored and the most appropriate model will be justified and used to demonstrate how the proposed change could be implemented. Finally, change evaluation will be explored and examples of how change can be evaluated given in the attempt to ensure its success.
