Abstract

Briefly, my article addresses the contradictory relationship we have with our pets, particularly cats and dogs. Philosophically, love is defined as a clear relationship amongst humans and as such dependent on human nature. Traditionally, the nature of animals is understood in opposition to human nature. This categorical differentiation has been drawn into question (e.g. Derrida) especially when looking at our relationship with our pets. Contemporary photography can visualise essentially complex and contradictory facets of our relationship with our pets. The tolerance of the disgusting and disturbing can be viewed as a mark our love of animals. Text by Katrin Joost, images from John Darwell's DDSBs (Discarded Dog Shit Bags) series.
